Frequently asked questions

Victoria replies to your frequently asked questions about caring for your dog.

Should I have my dog neutered?

The short answer is yes. Getting your dog spayed (female) or neutered (male) is an important part of dog ownership. Evidence suggests that neutered dogs can end up leading healthier, longer lives. Plus it relieves the pet overpopulation problem where dogs end up in shelters because there are too many dogs and not enough homes for them to go to.

When should he have his vaccinations?

Vaccinations, when given regularly, give dogs protection against serious and sometimes fatal diseases so it is essential he gets them. Puppies start their vaccinations as early as six weeks, so arrange a visit to your vet as soon as you get your puppy. Your vet will then be able to recommend and arrange your dog’s lifetime vaccination programme.

Should I have him micro chipped?

“Chipping” your dog involves injecting a microchip under the skin, usually at the neck. If your dog is lost then a vet or shelter will use a scanner to read the information on the microchip and return your dog to you. So it makes sense to get him chipped just in case he does go missing. It’s also worth remembering that Direct Line pet insurance comes with 12 months free membership of the missing pets bureau.

Why do I need to train my dog?

Dogs need to learn how to live in a domestic environment. They are natural hunters and are highly social animals that do best when they have a good owner to teach them how to live in a human world. Training your dog means that as well as creating a solid bond between dog and owner your dog will feel happier and more confident if he has a good leader to follow.

What should I do if my dog steals food?

This isn’t his problem, it’s yours. Make sure that your dog doesn’t get the chance to eat what you don’t want him to. Remove any temptation by locking food away in a cupboard and keep your bin lid on at all times.

How often should I walk him?

Well, he relies on you for just about all of his exercise so you need to make sure he is being walked regularly. Not only will it keep him lean and fit but it also keeps his system in balance. Depending on his age and size, I recommend three short walks so he can relieve himself and then a good run in the park or fields.

What should I do if my dog has worms?

Although unpleasant, it’s certainly not unusual for a dog to get worms and if your dog does, they must be treated. If your dog repeatedly ‘scoots’ (rubs his bottom along the ground) he might have worms or a problem with his anal glands. A quick visit to the vet and a short course of medicine later and all should be well. Every dog needs to be wormed regularly and your vet can recommend the best way to do this. Prevention is better than cure!

Should I get him insured?

Most definitely. It’s not nice to think about but he can get injured or become ill and if that happens you need to make sure he gets the best medical care. Vets’ bills can be very expensive and if the worst does happen it’s good to know that you can soon have him back on his paws as quickly as possible without being left with a nasty bill. Direct Line pet insurance comes with loads of great benefits such as free 12 months membership to the Missing Pets Bureau, up to £500 towards advertising expenses if you pet is lost or stolen, and £1000 holiday cancellation cover if you have to cancel or cut short a holiday to look after your pet.
